Five days after being second in the 1,500 meters, the Ethiopian Gudaf Tsegay was proclaimed world champion in the 5,000 meters with a time of 14:46.29, beating the Kenyan Beatrice Chebet (14:46.75) and another Ethiopian, Dawit Seyaum ( 14:47.36), who benefited from the effort made by his compatriots, taking turns throughout the race.
The Ethiopian Letesenbet Gidey, world record holder of 5,000, 10,000 and half marathon, who aspired here to a world double after having won the 10,000 meters, arrived fifth at the finish line with 14:47.98, just ahead of another favorite, the Dutch Sifan Hassan (14:48.12), double Olympic champion in Tokyo, who had been fourth here in the 10,000.
Gidey had a new appointment with the podium in the 5,000 final at the head of a powerful Ethiopian trio completed by Tsegay and Dawit Seyaum, dominating the world list for the year.
