Marathon world champion Ruth Chepngetich, originally from Kenya, set a new world record at the Istanbul Half Marathon by setting her third victory in the Turkish race with a time of 1:04:02. This world record is achieved with a wet floor, making it even more impressive due to the weather conditions that prevailed during the athletic event. Chepngetich, who was a winner in 2017 and 2019, broke the world record held by Ethiopian Ababel Yeshanew, with a time of 1:04:31, since she won at Ras Al Khaimah on February 21, 2020.

For her part, Yalemzerf Yehualaw from Ethiopia achieved second position with a time of 1:04:40, while Kenyan Hellen Obiri, twice world champion of 5,000 m on the track, achieved third position with a time of 1:04: 51, in his debut in the half marathon distance. It is the first time that three women have managed to beat 65 minutes in the same athletic race.
